L.Cormier, D.De Sousa Meneses, D.Neuville, P.Echegut, 'In situ evolution of the structure of alkali borate glasses and melts by infrared reflectance and Raman spectroscopies', Phys. Chem. Glasses 47 430-434 (2006)

The structural modifications induced by temperature are investigated for alkali borate glasses by infrared reflectance and Raman spectroscopies. The borate network is significantly changed above the glass transition temperature with a decrease of the proportion of BO4 tetrahedra. The analysis of the infrared reflectance spectra indicates that alkali environment is also affected. In the liquid state, nonbridging oxygens are formed and their abundance around alkali increases, favouring ionic mobility.
